The Fine Art of Networking

Chamber mixers. Networking clubs. Leads groups. Power breakfasts. Whew! Once you've found the time for some of these events, how do you maximize your networking efforts so that people remember you - and want to do business with you?
First, remember that networking is a sharing of information and ideas. Sure, we all want to talk about our own businesses, but what happens if everybody's talking and no one's listening? Be an avid listener and demonstrate a genuine interest in someone else's business. You'll reap the rewards in referrals!

"Business partnering" brings businesses with common interests (even common services or products) together as strategic allies. One company we know of is a master at partnering. A training and development firm, they have partnered with several similar firms and created strong referral and project-sharing teams. This is a smart way to do business. The motto: Don't be afraid of your competition! Create an alliance with them. Share information and work together. Remember, no single company can provide all things for all people. By aligning your company with others that you can outsource or job share, everybody wins - especially the customer.

Networking and leads groups are particularly effective in this "relationship" market. An array of weekly and monthly meetings is listed in most business publications and you can find groups ranging from Irish networking to strategic planning. Join a committee or, better yet, volunteer to head up a project so that you will be the key contact person.

You can further enhance your business relationships by being a network mentor. When you attend functions, make it a point to approach several people you've never met, find out about their businesses and introduce them to your contacts. Consistently put others first and you set yourself apart as a savvy, professional and considerate business person. Who wouldn't want to do business with someone like that?
