Mayo Clinic Surgeon to Receive First Professional Mentor Award

PHOENIX, ARIZONA, MAY 31, 2001. DavenportFolio, a new professional career resource in the Valley, is creating an annual award program to honor leaders who demonstrate the value of mentoring.

Debra Brittain Davenport, president and CEO, is establishing the award to recognize the power of professional mentoring in today's business environment. "Most successful people can look back and pinpoint one person early in their careers who took the time to guide them, to give them trusted advice, and inspire them to move forward," Davenport explains. "This award formally acknowledges the contribution of mentors."

Davenport's company provides extensive mentoring and career development services to professionals, mid-to-senior level managers, and entrepreneurs. DavenportFolio also provides seminars on entrepreneurial and career-enhancing topics, and offers the nation's only certification program in professional mentoring.

The 1st Annual DavenportFolio Professional Mentor Award will be presented on June 19, 2001 to David D. Douglas, M.D., Medical Director of the Liver Transplant

Program at Mayo Clinic Scottsdale and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Mayo Medical School.

"Dr. Douglas exemplifies the role of mentoring," says Davenport. "By readily declaring appreciation to his own professional mentor and in turn serving as a mentor to other young doctors, Dr. Douglas confirms the importance of the mentoring process."

Assisting Davenport in the award presentation is Jorge Rakela, M.D., Chair of Transplantation Medicine at Mayo Clinic Scottsdale. "I am fortunate to have benefited from many mentors, but Dr. Rakela is the one individual I consistently value for his direction and encouragement," Dr. Douglas expressed when learning of the award. "It is his guidance I remember when I mentor others."

Dr. Douglas is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. He joined Mayo Clinic Scottsdale in 1992 after completion of his gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship at Mayo Clinic Rochester. He led the development of a comprehensive liver clinic, offering patients both pre- and postoperative liver transplants closer to home. In 1997 Dr. Douglas was appointed Medical Director for the Liver Transplant Program.

An avid researcher, Dr. Douglas publishes works on therapies for chronic viral hepatitis, specifically treatment and prevention of post-transplantation recurrence of hepatitis B and C. His research has been honored by the American College of Physicians and the Glaxo Research Institute.

Dr. Douglas also serves as chair of the Medical Advisory Committee for the Arizona Chapter of the American Liver Foundation and lectures on current issues in liver research. Dr. Douglas resides in Scottsdale with his three children, 7-year-old twins Dana and Daniel, and 5-year-old daughter Deborah. The award and fundraising reception is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19, at event co-sponsor El Portal Luggage in the Biltmore Fashion Park in Phoenix. Donations are being accepted by the Arizona Chapter of the American Liver Foundation.
